Concrete Vs. Wood Home Construction

October 3, 2019 By admin19

The debate of concrete vs wood home construction has been going on for many years. Some believe that wood construction has more benefits, while others believe that concrete is a much better choice. All these different opinions can make it very difficult to figure which option to choose for your own home. Here are the pros and cons of both concrete and wood home construction.

Concrete Home Construction

Concrete home construction has been an important and prominent part of the landscape for years. There are many reasons why, but the two biggest reasons are that it gives structural benefits and low-maintenance living.

Pros

It’s Moisture Resistant

Brick and mortar walls can help protect the interior of your home from damp or damage. The walls can also soak up any small amounts of water that does get through the stucco.

It’s Energy Efficient

Homes made from concrete usually require less energy for heating and cooling than homes made from wood.

It Provides A Healthier Living Environment

Concrete isn’t an organic material, which means that it’s less likely to grow mold, mildew or other microorganisms that can cause an unhealthy living environment.

Cons

It’s Not Cost-Effective

Concrete homes need deep foundations, and the use of heavy materials. This means that they are more expensive due to these building costs.

It Takes Longer To Build

Concrete homes need more building work than wooden homes, which adds to the cost, but it also increases the amount of time needed for construction.

Wood Home Construction

Wooden home construction is also a very popular choice in the US and Europe. It’s lighter, quicker, and less expensive, which are only some of the reasons why some people prefer it. However, while it has many benefits, there are also some drawbacks to it as well.

Pros

It Allows Faster Construction

Wooden homes can be constructed much quicker than a concrete home. It’s lighter, and some homes can be constructed entirely in a factory, and then moved onto the site.

It’s Cost-Effective

Wood construction is cheaper for many reasons. One of the reasons is because they have a 30% faster building turnaround, so there are much lower labor costs.

It’s Easier To Remodel

It’s also easier to remodel and add other features such as windows and doors to wood construction. As it’s easier, it’s also cheaper/

Cons

It’s Not Completely Termite Resistant

Wood homes are more likely to have issues with termites than their concrete counterparts.

It’s Not As Resistant To Moisture

Wood frames are given a moisture-resistant wrap, but they are not completely resistant to moisture. If moisture does seep in, it can cause much more damage than it would to a brick wall.

As both wood and concrete construction has pros and cons, it can help you to discuss your options and what would be best for you with an expert from our construction company.
